Uplapse vs Better Stack

A Better Stack alternative priced by plan, not by responder

Better Stack combines uptime monitoring, on-call and status pages with logs and other telemetry. This page sets out, from its public pricing page, where it is the better choice and where Uplapse is.

Where Better Stack is the better choice

  • Logs and telemetry in the same product. Better Stack sells log management and other telemetry next to uptime monitoring, so an alert and the logs behind it sit in one place. Uplapse checks services from the outside and does not collect logs, traces or metrics from your systems.
  • Unlimited phone and SMS alerts. Its pricing page lists unlimited phone calls and SMS. Uplapse does not send SMS or make calls itself; it hands alerts to PagerDuty or a webhook for that.
  • On-call scheduling built around responders. If you want rotations and on-call for many responders as the centre of the product, it is built for that.

Where Uplapse is the better choice

  • A free plan you may use for a business. Better Stack describes its free tier as for personal projects. Uplapse’s free plan may be used commercially.
  • One price for the team. Uplapse plans include team members (3 on Free, 10 on Starter, 50 on Growth) with no per-responder fee, so adding the second and third person who answers alerts does not change the bill.
  • Checks for what lapses, not only what is down. Domain registration, certificates, SPF, DKIM and DMARC and Certificate Transparency are on every plan, Free included.

What Uplapse does differently

  • The failures that come before an outage. Certificate expiry and changes, domain registration expiry read from the registry over RDAP, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, and Certificate Transparency monitoring for certificates issued in your name. They are on every plan, not held back for higher tiers.
  • Evidence, not just up or down. Content and response assertions, multi-step HTTP journeys that pass values between requests, and heartbeat monitors for cron jobs and backups. A check that could not run is reported as unknown, never as a pass.
  • Incident response in the same place. Alert routing to email, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, Telegram, Google Chat, Mattermost, PagerDuty, Splunk, Zapier or webhooks; escalation that stops when someone acknowledges; maintenance windows; status pages; and SLOs with error budgets.
  • SSL, domain and DMARC checks on the free plan. The free plan has the same check types as the paid plans, including SPF, DKIM, DMARC and Certificate Transparency; it is limited by monitor count and frequency only.

Switching from Better Stack

There is no importer for Better Stack exports yet, so monitors are created again in Uplapse. Most teams start with the few URLs that matter most, add a certificate and domain expiry check for each domain, and run both tools side by side for a week before moving alerting over. Uplapse can export and import its own monitor definitions as JSON, so a setup built once can be copied between accounts.
